Timely Feedback for the Writing Process OPEN SEATS
Tuesday June 3, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am MDT
We will go over using Google LTI through Canvas, Brisk Teaching AI feedback tools to enhance the writing process, and other supports offered through Brisk Teaching AI. Using the external tool link in Canvas to attach a Google LTI allows teachers to have a pre-formatted Google Doc force copy for each student, have access to version history for each student, and embed a rubric that automatically transfers the score to Canvas. The google extension, “Brisk Teaching,” has many functional features designed to assist teachers with lesson design and feedback. Since timely, relevant feedback has the largest impact on student growth, we believe that Brisk Teaching, and other generative AI tools for teachers, will have a significant impact upon our teaching practice and student growth.

We also suggested a different color name badge to help presenters know the new people and start building connections. Not sure what this will look like, but wanted to start a conversation about it.

Writing with Purpose: Elevating Student Writing with Micro-Mentor Texts OPEN SEATS
Tuesday June 3, 2025 11:10am - 12:10pm MDT
This session invites teachers to explore how Micro-Mentor Texts can transform student writing by fostering intentional, skill-driven practice. Participants will learn how this strategy, inspired by Penny Kittle’s work, moves students away from formulaic responses and toward a deep, conceptual understanding of writing moves.
A highlight of the session is the firsthand success of Tyson Swasey, a 7th and 8th grade teacher who has implemented Micro-Mentor Texts with great results. Tyson’s classroom experiences demonstrate that when students engage with these brief, powerful texts, they write more creatively, thoughtfully, and they write with purpose. His success stories will serve as a model, showcasing how the use of Micro-Mentor Texts can empower students to become confident writers.

Throughout the session, participants will:
- Engage in a hands-on exploration of a Micro-Mentor Text
- Experience the process of writing with intention and analyzing key writing techniques
- Discuss strategies for integrating these texts into various writing genres, from narrative to informative to argumentative writing

If Your Body Can Do It, Your Brain Can Think It OPEN SEATS
Tuesday June 3, 2025 1:10pm - 2:10pm MDT
After reading a chapter in “How the Body Knows Its Mind” by cognitive researcher Sian Beilock, I was determined to incorporate more movement into math class to enhance conceptual understanding and to increase neural pathways between more parts of the brain during math learning. This movement is connected to the concept and not just movement for getting wiggles out. I’m excited to share some of that movement, both connected to traditional manipulatives as well as using our bodies to represent our reasoning, and some of the positive outcomes I’ve seen as a result.

AI for the Assist: Focused Feedback for Student Writers OPEN SEATS
Tuesday June 3, 2025 1:10pm - 2:10pm MDT
In this presentation, we will explore the use of Custom Writing Chatbots in MagicSchoolAI as writing coaches for students in an AP Human Geography class. These chatbots provide personalized feedback, guidance, and support, helping students enhance their writing skills and develop their analytical abilities. I will demonstrate how to customize these chatbots to meet specific classroom needs and student learning objectives.

My co-presenting teacher, Jordan Smith (who teaches AP Human Geography), will share her firsthand experiences and anecdotes about from the training we did at Brighton in October of 2024; to our collaboration in building a chatbot that would address her specific needs; to how her students have utilized the chatbot, the impact it had on their writing process, especially in getting more frequent practice with the FRQ writing format they will be assessed on with the AP exam, and the overall improvements observed in their work as a result.

Together, we aim to demonstrate the potential of AI in education, showcasing how teachers can effectively implement and customize these chatbots to foster student engagement and success in writing beyond an ELA classroom.

Students often turn to AI for final products when they misunderstand or want to avoid work. In response, guided and focused use of AI in the initial stages of creative or critical production can delineate appropriate use – and actually encourage original thinking. We will discuss the uses and limitations of selected tools in MagicSchool, and we will show how to set them up for moderated student use, as they brainstorm and develop ideas for projects and writing.

MagicSchool for Writing Support OPEN SEATS
Tuesday June 3, 2025 2:20pm - 3:30pm MDT
This presentation will share experiences using MagicSchool as a support for students in creative writing and language arts classrooms.

I think these strategies could be use across many contents even though I've only used them in math.

AI in the science classroom - or Why should I ask a 2 year old to help my students learn? OPEN SEATS
Wednesday June 4, 2025 10:50am - 11:50am MDT
AI is no longer a distant concept that may one day impact our students' lives—it's here, and it's already shaping the world around them. If we don't prepare students to use AI ethically and thoughtfully, we're failing to equip them for the future. The key focus must be on ethics: AI should never replace the core skills of learning, critical thinking, or creativity. Instead of asking, "Will this use of AI make my life easier?" students should be asking, "Will this use of AI make me smarter or better?" We need to guide them in leveraging AI to enhance their growth, not to avoid the hard work of thinking and problem-solving.
